PERCHROMA - Paulo Motta, 2000

I started composing Perchroma for effective instrumentals and, later, in order to investigate how sound samples from non-electronic instruments would emulate the original instruments, although with a certain unpretentiousness and I had previously used this resource in two of my copyright CDs in association with physical instruments . Integrated by three sessions - Perch, Chroma and Perchroma -, the piece was written for percussion ensemble (with instruments of defined and undefined height), pianos, transverse flutes and guitars with steel strings. I recorded an exclusive version with MIDI instruments, but that, however, did not satisfy me in acoustic terms (although the synthesizer provided relatively reliable samples of acoustic quality). Subsequently, some parts were replaced by the execution of the instruments themselves - particularly the piano and the transverse flute -, which, in turn, received digital treatment to match the MIDI instruments emulated by the sound samples. Perchroma features jazz elements (notably in the first session) and polytonal passages.
Twenty years after its completion, I still consider it a fundamental piece to put the acoustic and formal context of my exclusively electronic compositions into perspective.
